  • Taoyuan is the city with the second largest indigenous population in Taiwan, only behind Hualien County.

On the afternoon of April 26, Taoyuan Mayor Chang San-Cheng visited the Taoyuan District to attend the “2024 Taoyuan City Indigenous People’s Harvest Festival and Annual Rituals Joint Marketing Press Conference.” Mayor Chang stated that the indigenous population in Taoyuan City has been increasing annually, now exceeding 83,000 individuals, making it the city with the second largest indigenous population in Taiwan, only behind Hualien County. A distinct feature of Taoyuan is its comprehensive representation of all 16 indigenous tribes’ cultures. To further promote indigenous culture, this year (2024), the city is hosting 12 district harvest festivals and 11 tribal annual rituals, with a total of 23 events. The first event, the “Bunun Ear Shooting Festival,” will be held on May 4 at Daxi Riverside Park. Everyone is welcome to experience the richest indigenous culture in Taiwan right here in Taoyuan.

Mayor Chang mentioned that the Taoyuan City Government hosts a series of indigenous events from May to November each year. Among these, the “Harvest Festival” is an important folk ceremony celebrating the harvest of the indigenous people. The city assists the indigenous communities in all 12 districts of Taoyuan in organizing their Harvest Festival activities. In addition, for the 11 major indigenous groups, the City Government coordinates efforts across the entire community to conduct “Annual Rituals” events. These activities showcase the cumulative life experiences of the tribal members and ensure the traditional cultures of each indigenous group are passed down through generations.
