The Taoyuan City Government has achieved remarkable success in promoting smart city governance! On September 25, the results of the 2024 Gartner Eye on Innovation Awards for Government were announced. After two rounds of international evaluation, the “AI Environmental Pollution Recognition System” of the Department of Environmental Protection secured the top prize in the Asia-Pacific region. Meanwhile, the “AI-Enabled, Multi-Faceted Safety Protection for Pedestrians”—a collaborative effort among the Department of Transportation, the Police Department, the Office of Road and Accessory Maintenance, and the Smart City and Community Development Committee—claimed the second-place award. This marks the first time in the five-year history of the awards that two projects from the same city have been shortlisted, and it’s unprecedented globally for one city to capture both first and second place. This achievement reflects the international smart city community’s high recognition of Taoyuan’s implementation of “Smart Taoyuan” in urban governance.

Organized by the renowned U.S. research and advisory firm Gartner, the Gartner Eye on Innovation Awards for Government did not differentiate between levels of government this year (2024); local, state, and federal submissions were all evaluated together. The judging panel comprised senior digital and information officials from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Israel, and Abu Dhabi. Winning an award signifies high recognition from the global smart city community.

Gartner will feature Taoyuan City Government’s two digital innovation projects—the “AI Environmental Pollution Recognition System” and the “AI-Enabled, Multi-Faceted Safety Protection for Pedestrians”—as case studies on its official website. This will allow government departments worldwide to learn from the results and experiences of “Smart Taoyuan.”
