On the afternoon of March 17, Taoyuan Mayor Chang Shan-Cheng attended the online signing ceremony for the sister city agreement between Taoyuan City and Aur Atoll of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Mayor Chang stated that under the witness of Ambassador Anjanette Kattil of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to Taiwan and Ambassador Hsia Chi-Chang of Taiwan to the Marshall Islands, Taoyuan City and Aur Atoll established sister city relationship. He expressed hope that both sides would find more common ground in culture, education, tourism, and economic trade, working together to deepen city friendship.
Mayor Chang noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the Marshall Islands in 1998, both sides have maintained solid and profound ties. Cooperation between Taoyuan City and Aur Atoll began with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in 2018. Mayor Chang expressed gratitude to Ambassador Kattil for facilitating continuous communication between both sides, leading to the decision to establish a sister city relationship. He also highlighted Aur Atoll’s rich marine tourism resources and renowned weaving crafts, noting that Taoyuan similarly boasts numerous Indigenous and Hakka artists specializing in creative weaving crafts. Mayor Chang looks forward to promoting exchanges between the two cities in the future.
